Back in January 2010 (I can’t believe it’s been that long!) I posted that my New Year’s craft resolutions were to learn how to make socks two at a time using circular needles and to make more custom fashion dolls in crocheted gowns.
How’d I do? Well, I haven’t made any socks, still haven’t got that second circular needle needed to do them two at a time even, but I DID start making dolls again. And I’m so glad I did. It had been several years since my last doll and I’d forgotten how much I loved to do it. So in 2011, I made a beautiful doll in a gold turn-of-the-century Edwardian gown. She came out so pretty I wasn’t sure I wanted to sell her, but I put her in my Etsy store and sure enough she found a new home very quickly.
So now that I was hooked, I started on two more dolls. A purple fairytale princess that’s based on an Annie’s Attic pattern, with straight crochet to create beautiful lacework to adorn the gown, and an Egyptian fashion doll that is based on a pattern from Paradise Publications.
Like the Edwardian gown, this pattern features crochet, but also lots of beads and other shiny accessories that turn the dolls and dresses into works of art. The pattern (available here) is actually for two dresses, but for my doll I’m merging different elements of each look for my one-of-a-kind doll. She’s not finished yet, but already I can see how pretty she’ll be. It will be hard to part with her, but I do intend to put her in my Etsy store when she’s done.
I didn’t make any new craft resolutions this year except to do something about all the UFOs (bags of unfinished projects) in my house. Since the unfinished dolls count toward that goal, I tell myself I’m making progress and sticking to my goal.
I hope you’re meeting your crafting goals or resolutions this year, whatever they may be, and having fun along the way
Happy Crafting!

Hi–I admire your crocheted egyptian doll outfit and wondered the name of your etsy store so I might consider buying it. I have never crocheted before. Do you think I could learn to crochet this outfit myself? Thanx
Thank you, Kathy! My Etsy store is called Crafts By Cathy and can be found at: http://www.craftsbycathy.etsy.com
Stop by any time!
I find the Annie’s Attic fashion doll patterns easier if you’re just learning to crochet (simply because you don’t have to worry about carrying beads or sequins along as you work, etc.), but once you have the basic stitches down, both the Annie’s Attic doll patterns and the Paradise Publication patterns are easy to follow.
They both use basic stitches (chain, single crochet, double crochet etc.), but the Paradise Pub ones tend to use lots of embellishments like machine-made lace, beads or sequins while the Annie’s ones focus on creating almost everything out of crochet thread, (the trim, the lace, the flowers).
This link shows you some of the Annie’s patterns still available from the company :

and those that aren’t listed can usually be found on eBay. I think they did 12/year (one for each month) from 1992 to 1996, different time periods in each year. My favorites are the 1993 collection of Victorian gowns.
